What to Expect With Massage Therapy

Experiencing the First Massage

Initially you may feel slightly nervous about undergoing a massage. But this is not a big concern, as a lot many people feel the same ways as you. Common doubts are the happenings in the process and questions like would you have to talk or what your reaction would be if you are asked to undress or if you feel uncomfortable. Below are a few tips and suggestions, which will clarify a lot of your doubts and enhance your firs massage experience.

First of all you would be inquired about your overall health, including the problems, which you want to be treated, so the accurate forms can be determined which are most beneficial and safe for you.

Your comfort level will also be established, as feeing uncomfortable or exposed may affect the results of the massage. Your choice of scents and oils will also be considered.

More accurately, the technique or the form which would be implemented in your case should also be explained to you properly apart from the process that will be used. Your sensitivity levels are also likely to be inquired. Apart from being treated over a sore body part, the massage therapy is otherwise not painful and is quite comfortable.

Though it can be a little convenient for the masseur to work on you more effectively, if the body part which is being treated is exposed, however, it is not a rule. It is entirely dependent on your comfort level. You can consider draping yourself with a sheet; else you can undergo massage even being fully dressed. In case, you are not comfortable to undressing, it is suggested to wear loose clothing which does not restrict body movements.

A towel or sheet is provided by the professional and you will also be provided complete privacy to change. The areas which are being treated will be the only exposed areas.

If you choose a Swedish massage, you will have to lie down over a padded massage table, which would usually have a number of bolsters to provide you a comfortable posture. You may be required to change positions a lot of times, for better accessibility for the masseur.

You should inform the therapist if you feel uncomfortable at any point of time, so the positions can be changed accordingly.

Based on the location and the duration of the massage session, the therapist may play some soft music, light candles or dim the lights.

Depending on your preference of perfume, scented oil will be applied over you, as it is helpful in reducing the friction. This would later be removed properly before you change back into your clothes, so that they don’t get stained.

In case you wish to be silent during the session, inform the therapist, beforehand. You may still be asked to change positions but you can choose to be silent as much as you want.

A qualified and a good therapist would probably determine your preference and comfort levels, before proceeding with the session. It is always suggest consulting the therapist and discuss the procedure before undergoing the massage session.
